By outmatching all its competitors, 1984 Buick Grand National was a strong performer to produce quarter-mile times. The 1984 Grand National engine was a newly introduced 3.8 liters turbo V6 producing 200 horsepower. The engine power has exceeded 190 and 300 ft-lbs of torque, 240 pounds-ft of torque 305ci small block which used in the 1984 Camaro Z28. It was very close with the power 205, 290 pounds-ft of torque 350ci small block used by 1984 Corvette.

The 1985 Buick Grand Nation continued became strong performance. It still one of the strongest engines in the market in 1985 and used the same Buick V6 turbo. Only the lightest Mustangs, Firebirds, Camaros and powerful Corvette was faster. At that time, there was actually no competitor in the midsize market that rivaled the United Grand powerful.

Buick decided to go with a bang before stopping production altogether. In 1987 Buick GNX was the ultimate expression of modern muscle car for all of the 1980s. The standard Grand National received ten more horsepower to 245HP. The GNX was a strong car that was the fastest production car in GM's history up to that point.
